Boxing rules that even amateurs can understand
ring
- The ring in which boxing competitions take place is generally square, with sides ranging from 16 to 20 feet (approximately 4.9 to 6.1 meters). The floor of the ring is covered with soft mats and surrounded by ropes.
Progress of the match
- A match consists of three-minute rounds, typically 10 to 12 rounds in professional matches, but more often 3 to 4 rounds in amateur matches.
- There is a 1 minute break between rounds.
player equipment
- Players participate in the match wearing gloves, Groin Guard (lower abdominal protection), and dental mouthpieces.
- Head protection is not required in professional boxing, but is mandatory in amateur boxing for safety reasons.
Deciding on victory or defeat
- Knockout (KO) : If a fighter fails to stand up within count 10, the match ends as a knockout.
- Technical Knockout (TKO) : If the referee determines that it is inappropriate for one fighter to fight further, a technical knockout will end the match.
- Points Determination : At the end of all rounds, the winner will be determined by the judges’ scores. Scoring is based on offensive effectiveness, defensive technique, and aggressiveness.
Against the rules
- Prohibited acts : hit better (attack to the back of the head), kidney punch (attack to the kidney), rabbit punch (attack to the back of the head), clinch (excessive hugging or grabbing), low blow (attack below the belt) etc. are prohibited.
- If a player breaks these rules, they may receive a warning or have their points deducted.
referee and judge
- Referee : Oversees the match inside the ring, ensures the safety of the athletes, and takes action in case of rule violations.
- Judge : Scores the performance of the players each round to determine the winner of the match.
Boxing is a sport that combines technique, strategy, and physicality, and these rules have been established to ensure that matches proceed fairly and safely.
Boxing punches only hit the front of the opponent’s upper body.
In boxing, punches are generally limited to the front of the opponent’s body.
Basically, we aim at the following points
- Face – Aim for the face with punches like jabs, straights, hooks, and uppercuts. In particular, the nose and chin are effective points for aiming for KO.
- Head – The sides of the head can also be punched, but the blow can hurt the opponent, so technique and control are important.
- Body – Body shots to the ribs and abdomen will drain your opponent’s stamina and lower their defenses. Blows to the body are used as a strategy to gradually drain the opponent’s health, especially in long matches.
In boxing, it is against the rules to hit the following areas:
- back
- back of head
- Below the waist
- opponent on his knees
In a boxing match, it is important to maintain the spirit of fair play, sportsmanship, and respect for your opponent.
You are required to hone your skills and fight within the rules while paying attention to safety.
